Kit Kade Charbonneau Memorial Scholarship

Kim and Noel Foley created the Kit Kade Charbonneau Memorial Scholarship to honor not just Kit’s memory but the many happy years she lived in the St. Mary’s family of faith. Noel was Kit’s sister and Kim her brother-in-law.

Beginning in grade school, Kit was a joyous partaker in the life of St. Mary’s, be it in Church, school or her many extracurricular activities. She grew into a young woman at St. Mary’s, advancing from the elementary to the high school. After graduating in 1973, she attended St. John’s, where she studied Speech Therapy and Audiology.

It was in her early St. Mary’s years that Kit acquired what would become one of her most admirable attributes – her dedication to helping those in need, especially children and young adults. While in high school, she worked at The Viscardi Center where she gave children with disabilities not only loving care but hope. “When Kit walked through those doors," her brother Tommy recalled, "the home truly lit up, and the children flocked to her. It was at St. Mary’s that Kit learned her love of neighbor – as we all know, a vital Christian virtue. Kit made helping the children overcome their challenges look easy, even joyous, enabling them to speak or hear things most of us take for granted.”

In school and later as an adult, Kit always kept close to the St. Mary’s community. She arranged the music for her team for Sports Night. She participated in St. Mary’s plays, musical productions, food drives, and even attended Rosary rallies. After graduating, she remained a staunch St. Mary’s parishioner.

For Tommy, “Kit had a sense of humor and a laugh that was contagious. She also had a sharp wit. She even managed to amuse the strict and imposing Sisters who worked so tirelessly to keep their students moving in the right direction! Kit would come home and recap daily stories from the hallways of the school, which always made my siblings and me feel as though we were right there with her. They usually had us in fits of laughter.”

As a graduate, Kit stayed close to St. Mary’s and raised her family in Manhasset. She taught CCD, served on the IMH League and took part in the many events that came with Christmas and Easter. St. Mary’s was home to Kit and she and her husband Tom had their children follow in their footsteps attending Church at St. Mary’s.

“We lost Kit at an early age,” Tommy recalls. “She left us all with a loving husband, two spectacular daughters, Kristy and Noel, and took with her to Heaven a newborn son, T.J. She left behind a community of St. Mary’s friends and family who keep her memory alive and well to this day. We cherish her memory and hope that the wonderful beneficiaries of this Scholarship embark on a life that reflects a little bit of Kit every day.”

Amen!
