Jean M. Gallagher Memorial Scholarship

If one of the most popular motivations for setting up a scholarship at Saint Mary's is to commemorate the memory and legacy of a loved one, no scholarship of ours has been more popular — or more beautiful — than the one we set up to commemorate Jean Marie Gallagher.

Born on January 18, 1964 and raised in Flushing, NY, Jean attended St. Andrew Avellino elementary school and The Mary Louis Academy before graduating from Pace University with a Bachelors degree in Business. She and her family have been lifelong residents of Flushing, Bayside, Roslyn and Manhasset.

Jean spent many years working as a Bookkeeper for several parishes within The Diocese of Rockville Centre and for the Congregational Church of Manhasset. She worked tirelessly to share her Catholic education experience with her two most beloved sons, Brendan and Brian, both of whom are alumni of St. Mary’s Elementary and High Schools and completed degrees at St. Joseph’s University and Loyola University Maryland.

Jean passed away at age 58 on March 2, 2022 after a prolonged illness.

In addition to Brendan and Brian, Jean is survived by her six siblings – Joe, Mary, Cathleen, Ellen, Tom (Buddy), and Anne. She also leaves behind several adoring Brothers and Sisters in Law on both the Moynihan and Gallagher sides of the family. Too many loving Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, Friends and Co-Workers to list by name – all of whom cherished our time with Jean and will miss her terribly. We take comfort in knowing that her Mom and Dad, Winnie and Bob Moynihan, welcomed her into Heaven with a long and loving embrace.

Thanks to the largesse of so many of Jean's family and friends, St. Mary’s High School was deeply honored to be able to establish the Jean M. Gallagher Scholarship in honor of such a profoundly loved, special lady. The proud and loving mother of Saint Mary’s dual alumni, Brendan ’09, ’13 and Brian ’12, ’16, Jean was a staunch champion of Catholic education in general and our schools in particular. As a dedicated parishioner of the Church of Saint Mary and Gaels Parents’ Association team leader, she consistently rose to the occasion and volunteered for tasks great and small – all for the love of her boys and the Gaels. The response to the scholarship has been absolutely tremendous — proof that Jean lives on in the hearts of so many of her family and friends.

Together with their family, Brendan and Brian felt that a scholarship in her name would be a fitting tribute to her beautiful memory. All donations to this scholarship continue to be used for tuition assistance awarded to qualifying students of St. Mary’s High School, who share the Catholic faith, service, and love that Jean so wonderfully demonstrated.
